TREC WEEKEND AT FRC
As a fun end to the season , we ( the committee ) thought we could run a TREC training weekend on the 9th /10th October 2010. TREC trainers will be on hand to take us through this increasingly popular equestrian sport.
TREC competitions are broken down into 3 phases.
Phase 1 is orienteering ( POR ) - riders must navigate from point to point using only map and /or compass at set speeds.
Phase 2 is control of paces ( COP )- riders must canter a set distance as slowly as possible and return the same distance in walk as quickly as possible -designed to show the influence that a rider has over the speed / paces of a horse .
Phase 3 is obstacle course ( PTV ) - generally considered to be the most exciting ! A course of 16 obstacles of the type that a rider would meet whilst out riding must be negotiated in a controlled and accurate manner.
We will have a practical map reading session on the Saturday followed by a route to be followed round the bridle paths from the club field.
Sunday will have training in Phases 2 and 3.
Spaces are limited to 20 riders for each day. This training weekend will be open to nonmembers as well as members , depending on numbers.
Cost £20 for both days for members £12 for an individual day for members £25 for both days for nonmembers £14 for an individual day for nonmembers
If you would like a space for this training, please email Shona on
stating whether you want to do one day or two.
Look forward to seeing you all there.
DRESSAGE LEAGUE 2
Dressage League 2 proved almost as popular as Dressage League 1 with approx 70 tests being ridden, class numbers were up at all levels, the medium test even had 5 competitors! Congratulations to Liz Pullar and Jenna Cushnie who qualified for the SNE Dressage Championships in October at SNEC.
Results for Dressage League 2 are now on the Events page and will be sent to SNE in the next couple of days so look out for your names in August's edition of the magazine.
DRESSAGE TRAINING EVENT
With the help of Heather Carstairs and Linda Lucey, members were put through their paces riding tests for area competitions. 13 horse/rider combinations took part and Kim Drysdale won the bottle of pink champagne for the most improved score between the two tests with an increase of 12% on her mark second time round.
Thanks to Helen Sinclair, Lisa Allan and Jocelyn O'Connor for writing for the judges.
We can run more of these events if there is sufficient interest.
Everyone had a fun and successful time at Area. Marion Osler was an excellent chef d'equipe THANK YOU .
We were lucky that the campers pitched their tents in the cowshed as the Friday night was very windy , with the marquee and toilets blowing down - reminded us of Craigie!!
On the Saturday the dressage divas were out and had a very successful time , unfortunately due to miscalulations- we got one sheet back which had been miscalculated by 20 points sheets given out were recalled other sheets not given out.We are still awaiting the results we hope to hear by the 24 June.
Drinks including chilled Pimms and strawberries and cream with sparklers in it for someones birthday celebration(a day visitor )in the cowyard followed we Fifers know how to party! Showjumping on the Sunday started off in the dry after it had rained during the night and then it started to rain in time for us jumping . The blacksmith was kept busy putting stud holes in and our Studman - Alisdair Kettles was kept busy putting our largest spikiest studs in ! An adjustable spanner is always handy ! After alterations to the novice course which had been constructed too high the novice team rose to the challenge of jumping a large one stride double at the bottom of a slippy hill , so many people were falling off there that the paramedics were stationed there , health and safety removed it after the first round. The Fife team jumped it all safely and came in 2nd . The Intermediate team had a nice full height triple jump, again we did well and came 4th. The Style jumping was on the flat , Fife came a very close 3rd - one point between 1st, 2nd and 3rd!
We all arrived home late but happy on Sunday - when one of our competitors was in KFC on the way home a customer behind her was heard saying to her companion that the lady in front smelt funny!!- once home she went straight into a shower! Photos to follow .
Anyone wanting to compete at Burgie in July please contact Gillian Kettles on 07825 648 948 asap if you have not already put your name down.
The first of this years dressage league competitions proved to be very popular. There were 73 test ridden across the three arenas and some people are pretty sure that the last class was judged on how white the numnahs were as the judge was struggling to see in the dark! This dressage league also saw three qualifying classes (classes 4,6 & 8) for the Scottish & Northern Equestrian Magazine Riding Club Dressage Championship 2010 which will be held at the Scottish National Equestrian Centre on the 23-24 October. 1st to 4th in each qualifying class qualified as long as they acheived 65% and over for the Prelim & Novice classes and 63% and over for the Elementary class, riders were also excluded if they were also a member of BD.
Well done to Amanda Maxwell, Laura Rennie, Jenni Sandison & Steve Monaghan who all qualified in class 4 and to Kim Drysdale who qualified in class 6.
A big thank you to Shona for organising this competition and to all our judges, writers, stewards and scorers.
Thanks to all those who attended the team quiz night at Howe Country Centre on Friday night in aid of team fund raising. Although the turnout wasn't as good as we had hoped and expected, great fun was had by all who came along.
The quiz was won by the "Dressage Divas" - well done to Pam, Shona, Tricia and Linda who had a fantastic score of 76 points. They won a bottle of wine each (kindly donated by Freuchie stores and Marian Osler) and a meal voucher for the Lomond Hills Hotel in Freuchie. Our raffle was very kindly supported by several sponsors, with a £50 pound voucher for Harmony Hair and Beauty (won by Sarah Hutchison); a photoshoot with Helen Reece (won by Andrew Thomson); a lesson with club instructor Lauren O'Hagan (won by Shona Brearley) along with various bottles of wine!
Shona Brearley was also very kind to donate two tickets to see Jason Manford in Dunfermline to the fundraising efforts, these were auctioned off to Sarah Hutchison for £60.
The night wouldn't have been such a success without the donation of these prizes so Gillian and Amy would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who brought along a prize or sponsored us - a further thank you is required to Pet's Pantry in Anstruther for their donation to our funds.
The night raised £200 towards the fund raising for the teams going to area this year, let's hope that the dressage training event on Saturday 29th May is also a success!
SPRING SHOW JUMPING SHOW
This years Spring Show Jumping Show proved to be very popular with approximatley 150 rounds jumped across the day. In fact the junior classes which we expected to start around 1.30pm didn't start until after 4pm. Despite the hanging around everyone seemed to have a good day. For a fulll list of the days results see the Events page.
A big thank you should go out to our organisers, course builders, pole pickers, judges, writers and stewards.
This years Style Jumping competition saw a reasonable number of horse and rider combinations take part, this may be to do with the fact that this years competition also incorporated a Blair qualifier for the intermediate and open riders or that we had organised a Style Jumping demo the weekend before.
Unfortunately, there was a bit of a misunderstanding with regards to the legality of spurs. We were told on Saturday that spurs were now legal however, the judge was of the opinion that they were not. Having spoken with the BHS regarding this they have confirmed that spurs are legal and that the contradiction is within the BRC official rule book, where one page says they are permitted and the other says they are not. Apologies to anyone that this effected.
Otherwise on the course, the demo seemed to have proved worthwhile and in general the scores were good all round. Well done to Jenny Cushnie with Diablo Sie who was awarded the Glenrothes Riding Centre trophy for being the overall winner across the sections, narrowly beating Gemma Dixon as she was nearer the optimum time. Jenny, Gemma and Leonna Barret all qualified for the finals at Blair.
The Turn Out competition wasn’t quite as well supported as the Style Jumping and we saw eight rather polished combinations strut their stuff across the arena. Well done to Gillian Osler and Ollie who was awarded the Arthurlea trophy for achieving the highest score across the four sections.
A big thank you to Gillian Kettles for organising the competition, Tricia for writing for the judge and anyone else who assisted with the course building/collecting ring stewards etc.
For a full list of the results see the Events page or to see more pictures from the night click Here .
OBEDIENCE TEST
The first of this years point competition was fairly well attended compared with previous years. We saw a total of eleven horse and riders navigate their way around various obstacles which included mounting from the wrong side, walking through a balloon corridor (some rider being made to look like balloons!), crossing the tarpaulin river, hanging out the washing, climbing the banks, trotting through the slalom cones, filling the water jug and reversing through the corridor of poles. Each obstacle proving difficult in their own rights with some riders providing their own interpretations, like Amy and her unique mounting demo!!!
Each of the eleven obstacles were awarded a mark out of ten and as well as being awarded rosettes for their individual sections, riders were also competing for the Ruives Red Robin trophy which is awarded to the best score/time overall. This year, the trophy was awarded to Alison Irvine riding Brambles, well done Alison.
A big thank you should also go to Amy and Tricia for organising the competition and to Susan for judging and Linda for helping with the timing.
We are pleased to say that yet another successful event went by with no real problems. Even after a miserable start to the day the ground held up well and the rain cleared up late morning leaving us with quite a pleasant afternoon.
Out of the 238 horse/rider combinations 103 managed to finish with zero jumping penalties and while there were plenty of other stops on the course there was no real problem fence that seemed to cause any concern.
This event also saw the introduction of our new 2’ track. There was a lot of positive feedback about our “really wee but real XC jumps” and hopefully this will continue to grow in popularity.
We would like to thank all our stewards, bib secretarys, course control, commentary, scorers, jump judges, starters, tea ladies, fence repair etc. (the list is endless) for all your help. It really is appreciated and without you this competition would not run.
We hope everyone had a good day and look forward to seeing you all again in September.
Just a quick update on the dressage events happening over the next few months in FRC
Rosettes for the overall placings in the winter dressage league will be presented at summer dressage league 1 on the 19th May. If you cannot manage this date, please contact Shona after the 19th to arrange to collect your rosette.
The summer dressage league will contain qualifying classes for the Scottish and Northern Equestrian Dressage Championships at SNEC in October at Prelim, Novice and Elementary level. The results will also be published in the magazine. There will also be qualifying classes at the Open Dressage show.
To help raise funds for the teams going to Area qualifiers, and for some team practice, we are running a dressage training event on Saturday 29th May. Entry forms for this event are on the Events page.
Finally, there has been a change in the dress code for competitions and you must now have light ( white, beige ) coloured gloves.
FIFE HUNT PONY CLUB - TEAM SHOW JUMPING COMPETITION
A good day was had by all at the above competition which saw five of the six teams we entered in the ribbons and the other only narrowly missing out. FRC Atomic Kitten Gail Muir with Midnight Dancer Carol Prattis with Mr Scribbles Lucy Baker with Goldcrest Gem
The FRC Atomic Kitten had the pressure on right from the off set as with only three members in the team all scores had to count. They finished on a total of 20 jumping penalties and still managed to take third place.
A big well done to all those who took part. It was nice to see so many teams take part and we look forward to seeing you all at the next team event at Gleneagles on 21 March. If you're interested in competing at Gleneagles text Andrew on 07967 655691.
WINTER DRESSAGE LEAGUE 1
Despite the weather not being ideal, the first of our winter dressage league competitions went ahead and we saw approximately 30 riders riding a total of 54 tests. We had a few competitors trying dressage for the first time in the walk and trot test and some club members attempting a novice test having moved up from prelim. Well done to all the class winners.
A big thank you should go to Elsie Pollock Smith for standing in at the very last minute when one of our judges called off sick at 6.30am on Sunday morning. Also thanks to all the helpers, Helen Sinclair and Sheila McCann for writing, Amy Sanderson for stewarding and Andrew for scoring.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
We are please to say that the 44th annual general meeting of Fife Riding Club passed by fairly smoothly. The meeting started with the treasure’s and chairman’s report to the club, neither of which contained any surprises. Overall it would be fair to say that on reflection we had another successful year. With regards to the election of the office bearers and committee we had three office bearers (Chairman, Vice Chairman and Secretary) due to stand down, and had three nominations to fill these vacancies which were Linda Gove as Chair, Gillian Kettles as Vice Chair and Liz Glasgow as Secretary. Treasurer, Joe Smith still had one year of his term remaining. From committee we had seven vacancies to fill, five of the people standing down were prepared to stand again for election and we had two new nominations which were Amy Sanderson and Sheila McCann. We would like to welcome both Amy and Sheila to the committee and would also like to take this opportunity to thank Donna and Brian Hanlon who chose to stand down from committee for all the hard work they have done for the club over the years. For a full list of the 2009-2010 committee see the Who’s Who page.
There were a few issues raised from the floor which mainly revolved around teams, the winter training program and communication. Committee have agreed that they will look in to ways which will encourage more riders to participate in team events however, it was also noted that people wishing to participate in team events should make their names known to committee. The spaces available on the winter training was also brought up however, it was noted that from a membership of around 200 we only have twelve spaces available each Monday night and we will do our best to accommodate as many people as possible. It was agreed that committee will also look into further training over the winter, probably at weekends at the club field. Finally, with regards to the issues around communication it was noted that as much information as possible will be posted on the website however, it was also requested that members provide both a mobile number and email address so that they can be updated with news easily. Any members wishing to be included in any mailshots please send us a note of your details via the Contact page of the website (these details will not be passed on to any third parties).
The meeting closed with the draw of the Trolley Dash and we are pleased to announce that this was won by an Alan Gow.
We then went on to the presentation of the rosettes and trophies from the numerous leagues held over the course of the season. Results now available on the Events page.
GLENROTHES PONY CLUB - TEAM SHOWJUMPING COMPETITION
After a bit of coercing we are pleased to announce that we eventually managed to put together a novice and intermediate team for Glenrothes Pony Club’s team showjumping show at Howe Country Centre. The novice team was made up of Gill Harkin riding Roscoe, Lisa Allan riding Just Jack, Rachel Mangto riding Bracklyn Dougal and Andrew Thomson riding Pinn. Despite finishing on zero penalties the novice team were just not quick enough to make it into the placings. The intermediate team consisted of Jane Weir riding Mr Darcy, Kym Drysdale riding 21st Century Fox, Claire Skinner riding Rochester and Fearne Ainsworth who should get a special mention for being roped in at the very last minute to compete on a horse that we believe she had not ridden for some time. The intermediate team also finished on zero penalties and were quick enough to take second place. Well done to all our riders and a big thank you to Liz Glasgow for putting the teams together and acting as Chef d'Equipe on the day.
CRAIGIE AUTUMN HUNTER TRIALS
Despite the terrible weather in the week leading up to this event we were pleased to say that in true Craigie tradition the ground held up well and we were one of few competitions that did not have to cancel. In fact we saw approximately 240 horses compete around the course. The day seemed to run well and competitors were relieved to see that “the big spooky chairs” (competitors words, not ours) had been replaced with a more inviting first fence. There were no real issues to report out on the course with the exception of the two trips made out by the first aid. Unfortunately, this and a technical issue with our reporting radios did manage to cause some un-scheduled delays. We would like to thank all competitors for bearing with us, remembering that we too could do without these delays as these resulted in us clearing up the tents etc. in the dark and not leaving there until 10pm!
A big thank you must also go out to everyone that helped make this day a success (way too many of you to mention) as without your support this event could not run.
We hope you all had a good day and look forward to seeing you all again in April.
OPEN TREC WEEKEND
There are only a few spaces remaining for anyone wishing to take part in our open trec weekend. For further details see the Home page.
